Nationwide Strike Disrupts Belgium’s Travel and Public Services

Belgium faced widespread disruption on April 29, 2025, as a nationwide strike brought airports, public transportation, and government offices to a standstill. Unions organized the strike to protest proposed austerity measures they say would impact workers’ rights and social benefits.

Major airports, including Brussels Airport, saw flights grounded, while trains and buses across the country were either delayed or canceled. Travelers were left stranded, with long lines forming as services struggled to resume.

“This is a message to the government: protect our jobs, our pensions, and our future,” said union leader Marc De Wit during a rally in Brussels.

Government officials have called for dialogue but warned that the fiscal measures are necessary to address Belgium’s growing deficit. Talks between unions and the government are scheduled later this week.
